The Carousel

About The Carousel

After three years of hard work and expert collaboration, the City of Greater Geelong brought a beloved landmark back from its neglected state. The iconic Carousel was revived with painstaking detail backed by historical research supervised by Heritage Victoria and managed by experts at Carousel Restorations Pty Ltd., bringing together specialists in history, artistry and steam-era technology across Australia and North America to ensure an authentic result relying on 80% original material.

Boasting a unique and charming atmosphere, the Carousel is an Armitage-Herschell portable steam-driven carousel constructed in 1892. One of only 200 left in operation worldwide, this hand-carved wooden ride features 36 Dare horses and two chariots, brilliantly restored to their former glory by The Steampacket Place Development Board after purchase back in 1996. To make it more accessible for all ages and abilities, there has been improved access with a welcome mobility lift plus recharge point alongside their replica 1898 Gavioli Band organ situated within the pavilion, which adds to your experience! Not many places can offer such truly remarkable memories – made possible thanks to The Carousel’s efforts.

Don’t forget to listen out for the Gavioli Band Organ – it’s played especially here! This organ consists of both original parts and replicas purchased from an Australian collector; this combination creates delightful carnival-style music, which has become synonymous with carousels around Australia. It incorporates drums, a glockenspiel mechanism, and key components crafted circa 1898 in Paris, France – recreating typical instruments used across European carnivals over 100 years ago!
